Allen Park council to seek extension on city budget

The Allen Park City Council passed a resolution Tuesday to ask the state Treasurer’s Office for an extension that would allow the council and citizens to review the city’s budget before it is adopted.
The city’s 2011-12 fiscal year also starts Friday. Under state law, a city’s budget is to be adopted before the fiscal year begins.
“A four-day extension would keep council working on the budget within the charter and state proviso,” said Councilman James Flynn, who introduced the resolution. “An extension would allow a proper review period.”
“I can’t say it’s a guarantee, but the effort is worth putting forth,” said Todd Flood, the city’s attorney.
The council also approved resolutions that would allow Flood and City Administrator David Tamsen to draft millage proposals for public safety and debt retirement.
